What is Adacolumn®?

Adacolumn® is an apheresis column (about 20 cm long x 9 cm in diameter plastic cylinder) that contains specially designed cellulose acetate beads in a physiological saline solution. Adacolumn® is connected to the patient by two venous bloodlines and blood is circulated through the column with the help of a pump (Adamonitor). As blood passes through the Adacolumn®, granulocytes and monocytes/macrophages are selectively adsorbed to the beads, but lymphocytes and other cellular elements are not significantly adsorbed.

Adacolumn® with its selective adsorption of activated granulocytes and monocytes reduces the inflammatory burden by entrapment of these sources of TNF-α and other pro-inflammatory cytokines. The entrapped, activated cells are rapidly replaced by mobilisation of inactive, CD-10 negative, leukocytes from the depots.
